It started with my grandpa — and a soap that didn't work.
Vensoll exists because the first persimmon soap I tried failed — and figuring out why became the whole product.

For years, my grandpa had that old, musty smell. The kind nobody in the family quite knew how to bring up — and no amount of showering seemed to touch.
He showered every day. It made no difference. We tried stronger soaps, then deodorants, then just quietly opening windows. Nothing touched it, and nobody wanted to be the one to say anything.
Eventually I went looking for an actual explanation and found one: (E)-2-nonenal, a compound the skin starts producing more of with age. Ordinary soap does not bind it, which is why washing more often changes so little. In Japan, persimmon tannin — kakishibu — has been used against it for centuries.
So I ordered a persimmon soap online. It did nothing. I assumed the whole idea was folklore and gave up on it for a while.
The soap wasn't the problem. The amount of tannin — and the way you're supposed to use it — was.
What I eventually worked out was that the bar I bought had almost no real tannin in it — and no way for me to check. That is the normal state of this category: everyone advertises a percentage, nobody publishes anything you can verify.
